I’ve been using this journal for a while now, which is why it’s starting to look a bit scuffed in these photos! I’ve been using the booklet you get with the starter kit for journaling, the shorter booklet for a meal tracking journal, and the red kraft paper booklet for collaging/mixed media spreads.
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised because the paper is from Midori, but it is by far the best paper I’ve tried for writing with a fountain pen. Buttery smooth! I can see why so many people love Traveler’s Company journals and won’t use anything else. I’ve been really enjoying the paper. The main downside is that the journal doesn’t lay flat. I’ve worked around this by using clips, and sometimes taking the booklet out of the leather cover and working in it straight on my desk.
I love that there’s so many different types and colours of paper to try. The Kraft paper is nowhere near as good quality and is more likely to ghost and bleed, but it’s fine for collage spreads, and the three colours I got are great.
The Traveler’s Notebook is a big up-front expense, but the more you reuse the leather cover by replacing the booklets inside, the better the value. You’ll need to use 8 inserts for a comparable price per page to other journals. There is a huge range of papers for inserts including 52-156 gsm paper, washable, watercolour, coloured etc. – even sticker paper! See a this interview with the creater of the notebooks.
See the videos below for the detailed review and a first look at the journal when I unwrapped it, and check the detailed specifications for more information. For more information about my pen test process, see the pen test page.
