Leuchtturm1917 Hardcover

The classic hardcover Leuchtturm1917 dot grid notebook has long been a popular choice for bullet journaling for a long time. The ghosting wasn’t as bad as I’d been led to believe and it’s good for fountain pen users that like a bit of tooth in the paper. This is a good value journal, but there are alternative options worth considering.

I reviewed the hardcover and softcover versions of the Leuchtturm1917 classic dot grid notebook together, as there are only a few minor differences. I have previously reviewed the Bullet Journal 120gsm version, which can be found here https://theusefuljournal.com/product/leuchtturm1917-120gsm/

The classic notebook has 80gsm paper optimised for fountain pen use. The hardcover is made in Taiwan and the softcover in China. The hardcover has twice the number of pages and the softcover version as a result is significantly more expensive. The hardcover is good value with a low price per page, and the paper doesn’t disappoint unless you use watercolours (there’s no bleed through – they just don’t look good, but there’s nothing outstanding about this journal other than it’s easily accessible in countries all around the world. I’d lean towards the hardcover over the softcover because of the price, but I can see why people would like the lighterweight softcover.

My in-depth review video looks at the construction, features and markings of the journal, the quality of the paper, the environmental sustainability of the journal, interesting information about the company, and includes a pen test of a full range of pens and watercolour paints. See my pen test page for an explanation of each test.
