It was only a matter of time before Paperblanks included dot grid paper in their huge lineup of journals. My review mostly focuses on Ultra hardcover format of the dot grid planner with 100gsm paper, with occasional references to my original blank page Ultra flexi cover, also with 100gsm paper.
This journal is larger than an A5 but is not quite B5 size. The 100gsm paper is cream coloured and smooth to touch, making it enjoyable to write on. In my initial look I’ve seen a few issues with ghosting and bleed through and I didn’t like the results with water based media like Tombow dual brush pens and watercolour paints. Even so, I still love the journal when it’s used within its limits, because the construction is faultless and the cover designs are beautiful. Paperblanks was previously published by Hartley & Marks, who contributed to many environmental and social causes, and the new publisher, Hachette UK, also has a good environmental record.
My in-depth review video looks at the company and their products; the construction, features and markings of the journal; the company’s approach to environmental and social responsibility; and a pen test of a full range of pens and watercolour paints. See my pen test page for an explanation of each test.
