Motivation for weight loss

Like most people, despite having lost weight before (and got to my goal twice), here I am again, losing weight. This time is very different though, as I have a strong focus on resolving why I eat too much or exercise too little. I’ve committed to the WW program (Wellness that Works) formerly known as Weight Watchers. The WW program doesn’t just focus on your food intake; instead, we learn about how improving exercise, sleep, and our mindset can help us lose weight. If you’re interested in the program, check out their website. My posts will be about how you can use your journal to help you on your journey and this applies to any weight loss program.

Your ‘why’

Before you can set goals for your weight loss, it may help to understand why you want to lose weight. It’s very common for people to lose weight in preparation for a major event where they are going to be the centre of attention, like a wedding. You may want to improve your health. Did you know that losing weight can help people with Type 2 diabetes reduce their insulin resistance? Or that it can help women and men have greater success in conceiving a child?

You may just want to feel better about yourself, sleep better or have more energy. How do you see yourself at your goal weight; what are you doing? At this stage, be honest and write down the more unpalatable reasons for wanting to lose weight, such as people seeing you differently. Unfortunately there is truth in this – you’re more likely to get a job or a promotion, or have positive interactions with people if you have less weight on. If you need some ideas for why you might benefit from losing weight, have a look at this page by Olivia Tarantino.

I knew I started WW because my clothes didn’t fit any more after gaining weight due to menopause. I have some beautiful clothes and really want to be able to wear them again. I hadn’t thought about it further than that so I sat down and did an honest spread for myself about why I want to lose weight.

I think the most important reason for me is that when I feel like I have my eating under control, I also feel better about myself and a lot happier. If I’m eating too much and putting on weight I feel like I’ve lost control of everything and I run the risk of my depression getting worse.

Just make sure you’re honest because these reasons can be valuable later when you’re wondering why you’re still trying to lose weight.

Good luck and I hope you get started.
